Romans 3:9-18

Have you ever looked around at the “really bad” people and thought how glad you are that before Christ at least you were not that bad? Be honest with yourself for a moment and possibly consider how you sin now. Would you agree, like me, that often I say to myself and to God, “Well at least I’m not committing *insert bad sin here*?”

I think that Satan fools us into thinking we are not enemy combatants against God when we live in sin, but Paul says that our sin causes us to be the worst of offenders no matter where we come from or what our heritage might be. This particular instance is a comparison of the Jews to the Gentiles. Apart from God, Paul says that no one seeks Him, no one understands Him, no one does good, and that our nature is to deceive. Although my mind might tell me that apart from God I am not all that bad, the Word says that I am and that together none of us is holy.

Remember these words today as you reflect on your dependence on God this week.

Vacation Bible School is always one of my favorite weeks of the year. I can remember as a child going to VBS every summer with my mother as a regular staple in my teaching rotation. I was never great at crafts but when it came to Bible story time I always wanted to be one of the first ones with an answer. My oldest has inherited this trait from her father to be sure. My heart is regularly enlivened when I hear her guessing at stories about our Savior. I fully believe in the power and influence of God’s Word through VBS.

This year’s theme is “Galactic Starveyors” and centers around Colossians 1:15-16: “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through Him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see — such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through Him and for Him.” Because God made everything, we are seeking to show our children that everything owes its praise to Him! Come join us!

3-27-17 Newsletter

As I sit here and write this week’s newsletter entry my heart is still racing from the excitement of receiving the news of my acceptance into the PhD program at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. This means that the next four years of my life are going to be filled with even later nights, deadlines, and sacrifice, but it also means that I will be challenged, blessed, encouraged, pushed, and enriched by the things to come. I can think of no better reason to have a firm foundation . . . A healthy foundation begins with a healthy, vibrant, spiritually-disciplined life, but it is lived out in a church that loves and supports. I hope today as you see what priority Jesus places on building a healthy foundation that you know you have that here at Hartford. Grace and love to you all.

In Christ, Bro. Les
